Formby VIllage Tennis Club Latest News

Finals Day To Remember!

In this strange new CV19 world of social distancing and masks the Open Tournament went ahead at Formby Village Tennis Club.
As spectator numbers were limited, a first for the club saw a number of matches streamed live on YouTube. Jamie Scorgie organised this innovative approach and reported that at one point 40 people were streaming the Men’s Final and that a total of 160 people used the streaming option.
In the morning the Junior Final saw Jemima Bates-Thompson winning a close 3-set match taking the deciding set tie-break 7-5 against Charles Liptay.
The Senior Finals kicked-off at noon with the Men’s and Ladies Singles Finals. Despite a 47 year age gap between the Men’s Finalists, it was won in 2 hard fought sets by Ryan Smith, as he overcame a gallant Dave Croot 6-2, 6-2. Meanwhile, the Ladies Singles was a “family affair” with Carol Thompson victorious over sister Lynn McGarry 6-3, 6-2.
The Ladies Doubles saw sisters Carol and Lynn team up to take on Ulla Barton and Jan Showering with Carol and Lynn coming through 6-2. 6-2. (Men’s Doubles was postponed due to injury).
The last Final was the Mixed Doubles which saw Father and Daughter pairing of Stewart and Laura Burns taking on husband and wife partners Matt and Carol Thompson. Despite the Burns’ holding a 5-2 lead in the first set the Thompsons’ rallied to take it 7-5 and then won the second set 6-0 and with it the match.
The Plate Finals were also interesting and started with the Men’s Singles Plate Final which saw Matt Thompson come through a tough 2 -set victory over Chris Hartley 7-6, 6-4.
One of our most “experienced” ladies, Enid Lovelady made both the Ladies Doubles and Mixed Doubles Plate Finals’, and with her partner Barbra Carlisle she took the Ladies Doubles Plate with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Jan Hardman and Louise O’Connor. The Mixed Doubles Plate Final saw Barbra Carlisle and Steve Wood triumph 6-2, 6-1 over Enid and her partner Jamie Scorgie.
The Men’s Doubles Plate Final was a hard hitting affair played at high tempo with father and son pairing of Stewart and Matt Burns taking it 6-4, 6-1 over Andrew McMorran and Jerome Hobbs.
A big thank you must go to the Tournament Organiser (Carol Thompson), "IT Guru" (Jamie Scorgie), the Umpires and those members that helped set things up and keep things running smoothly.
Finally, thanks to all those who took part in the tournament and made it the success that it was.

Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions on spectators, the Club livestreamed the open men's final and selected other games on the Club's YouTube channel. To view a replay please visit
