Florida weather arrives five hours behind for American Tournament!
It was a rather wet affair for Formby Holy Trinity’s 2017 American Tournament on Saturday 10th June.
Members at the end of an enjoyable day!
The day started with the group stages, and over 30 of the club’s membership taking part across the four qualifying groups. An American Tournament is a ‘round robin’ style event, where you are paired with a player. You then play four games with your partner, before swapping with one of your opposition for another four games. The man and woman with the highest games scored from each group then progress to the final rounds, which follow the same format as the qualifiers, after new couples are drawn from the winners of each group. Tournament winners, Lesley and Andrew McMorran.
After a wet and gruelling qualifying stage, the final two couples to make the final were; Andrew McMorran and Shirley Harnden vs Martin Dennison and Lesley McMorran. The first game finished at a tantalising two games apiece, leaving the deciding four games to decide the winner. Lesley and Andrew took the final mini-set games by storm, winning by four straight games to love to take the trophy to the McMorran household.
Runners-up, Shirley Harnden and Martin Dennison.
Following the conclusion of the entertaining final, members were treated to a BBQ special thanks to the club’s social committee. The good weather had truly arrived, and the day was capped off by the scrumptious burgers, as well as the traditional strawberries and cream!
